The turnover index in retail and services

NAF rev. 2 - 2005 base

Origin of data

The turnover indices in retail and services are built from a tax source, the CA3 declarations, which are forms to be filled out by businesses for the payment of valued-added tax (VAT).

Objective and scope

Turnover indices in retail and services statistics measure the monthly trends of business activity in the sectors concerned.

From January 2009, these turnover indices in retail and services are calculated according to the NAF rev. 2 classification, which came into force on 1st January 2008.

  • In retail trade and personal services, the statistics are calculated in value as well as in volume and they cover the following sectors:
    • Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (division 45) ;
    • Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (division 47) ;
    • Accommodation and food service activities (section I) ;
    • Arts, entertainment and recreation (section R) ;
    • Other service activities (divisions 95 and 96 of section S).
  • In wholesale trade and other services to businesses, the statistics are calculated only in value and cover the following sectors:
    • Wholesale trade (division 46), except of motor vehicles and motorcycles;
    • Transportation and storage (section H) ;
    • Information and communication (section J) ;
    • Real estate activities (section L) ;
    • Professional, scientific and technical activities (section M) ;
    • Administrative and support service activities (section N).

The geographical scope covered is mainland France.

These statistics meet a national and European imperative and cover European regulation concerning short-term statistics ("STS" Regulation EC No 1165/98 of 19 May 1998, as amended by the Regulation EC 1158/2005 of the Council of 6 July 2005).

Processing

The indices in value are the monthly turnover indices in current Euros, excluding taxes. The indices in volume are dimensionless.

The series published are raw or corrected for seasonal variations and calendar effects (Working day Adjustment).

At each aggregated level of the classification, the turnover indices are calculated as Laspeyres indices (with constant weightings) of elementary indices, and are rebased every 5 years. The current reference year is 2005; in other words, the average value of each index for the year 2005 is 100.
